sometimes using effects like clouds and flares can also help — needs post-processing though, otherwise it may look too photoshop-ish. for example, dust-like effects or wind might be suitable to be put in the foremost layer to smooth out the ‘merging’ of the renders. some blending mods are also applicable to tackle this, but IMO that’s matter of preference.

To make sure that your renders is real enough to deal with, you need its aspect. One of the sense is Shadow.

indeed. this applies mostly to photographic/realistic image… but also note the color balance and levels. not necessarily implies shadows, but also the image layer as a whole. this is to avoid the merged image of looking ‘jagged’ due to contrast or color levels difference, although this is not always necessary to do.

unfortunately, many beginners (and in some cases, even more experienced users) tend to forget the basic know-how to tackle this. I’m not really at exception though.
